Sports Awards Criteria

Sport & Active Communities is proud to recognise the University of Roehampton students sporting achievements at the annual RSU & Sports Awards. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday 23rd May and will be held in Grove House. The awards acknowledge students for their performance, leadership and service to sport and physical activity at Roehampton over the last year.

Please make sure nominations address the criteria for each award and that you provide examples as to how the criteria has been met. The awards on offer this year are;

  • Sport Roehampton Bronze Award (Individual)
  • Sport Roehampton Silver Award (Individual)
  • Sport Roehampton Gold Award (Individual)
  • Team of the Year (performance based)
  • Club of the Year
  • POC athlete of the year
  • Sportswoman of the Year
  • Sportsman of the Year
  • Club Committee member of the Year
  • Esports Team of the Year 
  • Esportswoman of the Year  
  • Esportsman of the Year 

 

Important information for all nominations

Nominated students must be registered at the University of Roehampton, be members of Sport Roehampton and studying on a full or part time course. The only exception to this is the ‘Coach of the Year’ award as this can go to an externally employed coach.

Nominations for the awards can be received from one or more of the following:

  • Any member of Sport Roehampton
  • A University club member, captain or other committee member
  • A Sport & Active Community employee including coaches.
  • Any member of university staff who, through involvement with students is aware of particular achievement.

Each nomination must be made using the nomination form and submitted on the RSU website.

There are no numerical limitations on the awarding of Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards subject to the information previously detailed and meeting the criteria detailed for the respective award. 

Awards will be given in any sport recognised by Sport England and/or which is part of the Sport Roehampton student sport programme. 

In all cases of awards, the awards panel* will be the determining body and there is no right to appeal.

* Awards panel will include the Sport & Active Communities Manager, Sport & Active Communities Deputy Manager, Sport Presidents, a representative from Roehampton Students Union and a selection of students.

The awards criteria below should form the basis of nominations.  Please provide as much information as possible; stating clearly why you think each nominee meets the criteria.  Please note that the criteria include service, leadership and performance criteria.  In the cases of silver and gold nominations, please explain clearly why higher levels of award are appropriate.

 

Bronze

The candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to Sport Roehampton for one or more academic years and at least one of the following:

  • A clear commitment to a sports club or activity above and beyond that of a general club member** with clear examples of how this has been accomplished.
  • Support towards Sport & Active Communities initiatives beyond that of a general Sport Roehampton member** with clear examples of how this has been accomplished (e.g. supporting the development of new activities, community sport, volunteering, etc.)

** a general club or Sport Roehampton member is a student who attends sessions regularly and is available for matches/competitions, please make sure your nominations go above and beyond this.

 

Silver

The candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to Sport Roehampton for two or more academic years and at least one of the following:

  • An outstanding commitment to a sports club or activity and be able to show how they have positively influenced the development of a club through growth and performance with clear examples of how this has been accomplished.
  • An outstanding commitment towards Sport & Active Communities initiatives with clear examples of how this has been accomplished
  • A level of performance that reflects personal success in competitions or a significant impact on team performance and success. 

 

Gold

The candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to Sport Roehampton for two or more academic years and at least one of the following:

  • An exceptional contribution to Sport Roehampton, its clubs and initiatives over a sustained period recognised by staff, National Governing Bodies and peers with clear examples of how this has been accomplished.
  • An exceptional commitment towards Sport & Active Communities initiatives with clear examples of how this has been accomplished.
  • Exceptional sporting performance(s) resulting in national or international recognition for the university.

 

Team of the Year

This award will be presented to a university team who has achieved high standards of performance in competition and service to and representation of Sport Roehampton. The Team of the Year will usually have been successful in the BUCS/LUSL league and cup season and/or other competitive environments for example national competitions in their sport.

 

Club of the Year

This award will be presented to a university sports club which has demonstrated on-going commitment to developing the quality of activity, levels of organisation and administration within their sport. Evidence for this award could include the establishment of new committee structures, a large increase in participation rates, liaison with Sport & Active Communities staff and National Governing Bodies and contribution to community engagement projects.  

 

POC athlete of the year

This award is recognising Black or Asian student athletes for their sporting success at Roehampton, this can have been achieved on or off the field of play. This winner of this award has made considerable sporting achievements during the academic year and is committed, dedicated and passionate about their chosen sport. They have increased awareness of POC communities in their chosen sport and is a role model.

 

Sportswoman of the Year

This award is available for a female* member of Sport Roehampton, at individual sport or team/club level who has achieved exceptional standards of performance in their chosen sport during the academic year.  This award will usually be made to one individual who has both represented the University in BUCS or equivalent competitions and achieved wider recognition (for example selection to a representative squad, success in national competition).  Nominations for this category must provide evidence of why the nominee’s performance(s) and standards achieved are beyond those expected in weekly competition.

* Open to any student who identifies as female, or any student of non-binary or other gender who plays in women’s or mixed sports. 

 

Sportsman of the Year

This award is available for a male* member of Sport Roehampton, at individual sport or team/club level who has achieved exceptional standards of performance in their chosen sport during the academic year.  This award will usually be made to one individual who has both represented the University in BUCS or equivalent competitions and achieved wider recognition (for example selection to a representative squad, success in national competition).  Nominations for this category must provide evidence of why the nominee’s performance(s) and standards achieved are beyond those expected in weekly competition.

* Open to any student who identifies as male, or any student of non-binary or other gender who plays in men’s or mixed sports.

 

Club Committee member of the Year

This award is available to any individual who has supported the development of student sport through their voluntary work as a committee member.  Nominations are welcomed from members who have seen this individual go above and beyond their role.  Evidence must be provided regarding the development of the club and the direct impact the nominated individual has had in achieving this. It is likely that the on- going work of the recipient has led to at least two of the following:

  • An increase in student satisfaction within the particular sport
  • An improved level of all forms of communication with key stakeholders (Sport & Active Communities, Members, Officials, facility providers).
  • An improvement in levels of performance on and off the playing surface.
  • An increase in student participation (i.e. more students taking part in the club)
  • Has fundraised for charity or taken part in a wider University campaign

 

Esports Team of the Year 

This award will be presented to a university team who has achieved high standards of performance in competition and service to and representation of Roehampton Esports. The Team of the Year will usually have been successful in the BUCS NSE/NUEL league and cup season and/or other competitive environments for example national competitions in their sport.  

 

Esportswoman of the Year  

This award is available for a female* member of Roehampton Esports, at individual game title or team/club level who has achieved exceptional standards of performance in their chosen game during the academic year.  This award will usually be made to one individual who has both represented the University in BUCS NSE/NUEL or equivalent competitions and achieved wider recognition (for example selection to a representative squad, success in national competition).  Nominations for this category must provide evidence of why the nominee’s performance(s) and standards achieved are beyond those expected in weekly competition. 

* Open to any student who identifies as female, or any student of non-binary or other gender who plays in women’s or mixed sports.

 

Esportsman of the Year 

This award is available for a male* member of Roehampton Esports, at individual game title or team/club level who has achieved exceptional standards of performance in their chosen game during the academic year.  This award will usually be made to one individual who has both represented the University in BUCS NSE/NUEL or equivalent competitions and achieved wider recognition (for example selection to a representative squad, success in national competition).  Nominations for this category must provide evidence of why the nominee’s performance(s) and standards achieved are beyond those expected in weekly competition.  

* Open to any student who identifies as male, or any student of non-binary or other gender who plays in men’s or mixed sports.
