A better Digby, together.
A Saint for president.
My name is Robert St John, I am a Business student living in Elm Grove who is looking to join the Digby Stuart team, as President, in building a better college experience for all. I believe in building and improving the best community at Roehampton, so here are my three main areas of focus during my campaign.
Safety:
Roehampton University is where many of us call home during the academic year, therefore we all should feel incredibly safe at any time of day, at any time of year.
Our focus on student safety and wellbeing should always be strong, I believe the College and I can strive to achieve higher safety satisfaction, not only with students who live on campus but also those who don't. We can acheive this by looking into further improving the lighting in some areas as well as looking into current concerns about certain gates not properly being locked over night. Another key safety focus of mine is looking into a walking bus system after events for those who may feel this could benifit them.
It is important to relay any issues regarding safety, I will personally listen to any question, problem or ideas that anyone has regarding safety.
Community:
As President I plan to rally the community spirit, not only in Digby Stuart College but across the whole University.
Events are high up on my list of areas to look at. Notably, some of the events in the last 10 months have seen a decline in popularity, my mission is to find out why students are not engaging, then work with the whole of the student union on finding ways to improve our events. Additionally, with the outstanding success of the 2024 Digby Christmas market, I would like to work with the college closely to organise more Digby hosted events.
I would also like to raise more awareness that the President is someone who you can all talk to about any current issues you may have and your voice matters at this University to ensure that we really are a community driven by the students.
Services:
Recently there has been a fair amount of concern among the students with regard to some less than satisfactory services provided by the University.
Notably security response times for fire alarms within the Digby accommodation buildings is widely considered too slow by our residents with the recent cold nights, I would like to work with the University on ways that this can be less of an issue. I would also like to launch a motion to lobby the university into re-thinking the unpopular hike in accommodation rent prices, this can be through the suggestion of a freeze on rent prices after the next year. I know this is a major concern for our on campus students and also a big contributing factor as to why some students do not live on campus, I am committed to raising awareness about this and making sure that all of your voices are heard by the University.
