Growing up, I’ve connected with people mostly by talking about films -whether it is the plot, the characters, or even the actors that we admire so much. With time, it helped me develop confidence into talking about what I’m passionate about without feeling embarrassed about it. Now, being a film student myself, I realised I wasn’t the only one in that situation. Joining the Film Society helped me to meet new people that share the same likes as I do, and that’s why I’m nominating myself for Vice President of the Film Society.

If I ask you something about film, what comes to your mind? Is it the last film you watched in the cinema with your friends or family? Is it your favourite film? Is it the worst film you’ve ever watched? Is it the film that hasn’t been released yet, but you just know is going to be your favourite? Or is it the film you can’t wait to make yourself? As you can see, there are so many amazing things to cover when it comes to film, no one even knows where to start! However, that is about to change.

Along with the help of the Film Society team, I’ll make sure that this space is running smoothly:

  1.  In order to inform the members about the society’s events, I propose the use of social media as aid. This society has so much potential that it deserves to be recognized more, so constant Facebook and Instagram posts and stories will do a lot of help -even during the events and screenings.
  2. Before a screening, I’ll make sure to warn the audience about content warnings. This will be done both as a media post but also in the room while we’re setting up the film in order to avoid possible problems.
  3. And of course, I’ll always be available for everyone! I will be happy to answer to any questions the members can have. All I want is for everyone to consider me as one more friend.

Film has always been one of the things that I consider bring people together the most, and I’m hopeful that along with my team, we can make this society improve it even more so we can all share an amazing experience.

Thank you and see you soon,

Laura Mahecha
