This year's theme is "Reclaiming Narratives." We will honor our on-campus Black heroes alongside historical figures who have paved the way for future generations to thrive and excel. See what is going on at Roehampton this month.

Black History Month is an annual observance that celebrates the achievements and contributions of African Americans to United States history and culture. Here are the key details about this commemoration:

When - In the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is celebrated in October but in other countries round the world it can be celebrated in February

Who - The precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). It was initially established as "Negro History Week" and later expanded to a month-long observance in 1970

What - It is a time to recognize and honor the contributions of black people throughout history. The celebration includes various events, educational programs, and cultural activities that highlight Black achievements and experiences

Where - Black History Month is officially observed in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. However, celebrations and recognition of Black history and culture occur in many other countries as well.

Why – the purpose of black history month is to:

  • Celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans in various fields

  • Educate people about the struggles and triumphs of Black individuals throughout history

  • Promote awareness of Black culture and heritage

  • Address ongoing issues of racial inequality and discrimination

How - Black History Month is commemorated through:

  1. Educational programs in universities

  1. Cultural events and exhibitions in museums and community centers

  1. Media coverage highlighting Black history and achievements

  1. Government proclamations and official recognition

  1. Community gatherings and celebrations

Each year, a specific theme is chosen for Black History Month. For example, the theme for 2022 focused on Black Health and Wellness, acknowledging the contributions of Black scholars, medical practitioners, and other health workers. This year's Black History Month theme, "Reclaiming Narratives," represents a pivotal shift in the approach to recognizing and rectifying the historical accounts of Black history and culture. This theme emphasizes the importance of illuminating authentic stories, allegories, and historical events that have been previously overlooked or misrepresented. "Reclaiming Narratives" underscores a dedicated effort to:

  • Address and correct historical inaccuracies

  • Highlight previously untold success stories

  • Present the full complexity and richness of Black heritage

This initiative aims to empower individuals and communities to take ownership of their narratives, celebrating unsung heroes and challenging long-standing misconceptions. The theme extends beyond mere recognition, encouraging a critical examination of how Black history has been portrayed both in the United Kingdom and on a global scale. By focusing on reclaiming narratives, this year's Black History Month seeks to:

  • Foster a more inclusive and accurate representation of historical events

  • Promote a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of Black experiences

  • Encourage dialogue about the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping our collective history

As we engage with this theme, it is crucial to consider how reclaimed narratives can contribute to a more comprehensive and equitable understanding of our shared past, present, and future.

What events are being held and how to get involved:
