New Beginnings and Progress - My First Month At the RSU
Imran Shafiqi, RSU President
Dear Students,
I hope you are doing well. I am Imran Shafiqi, your newly appointed President, joined by Irene Reynolds, Vice President of Education, and Adam Fewster, Vice President of Welfare. We officially began our roles on July 1st and are currently undergoing training for our respective positions. Here is an update on what has happened during our first month.
One of my primary responsibilities as President is representing you on the University Council. This esteemed body guides the university's strategic direction and oversees critical matters. Recently, I had the privilege of presenting the RSU annual report, highlighting our successful transition from a deficit to a surplus. This achievement is a testament to the diligent efforts of our CEO, Michael, and the entire team. Moving forward, we are committed to maintaining our zero-sum or year-end surplus strategy amidst the ongoing financial challenges facing SU sector.
Additionally, I have joined the Senate, where key educational policies and student affairs are deliberated upon. Together with Irene and Adam, we have raised significant issues affecting both domestic and international students. Recently, concerns were raised regarding misleading communications received by postgraduate international students, causing undue stress. We have voiced these concerns to Professor Leigh Robinson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Education), emphasizing the importance of clear and transparent communication. Furthermore, Irene and Adam have advocated for improved initiatives for students in other intakes beyond September and January, an issue we plan to discuss further with the Dean of Continuing Education and other stakeholders.
Another important highlight of the month was the meeting with Vice Chancellor Jean-Noel and Student Life Director Jorden Kenny, alongside college presidents and Deputies. Together, we discussed to find collaborative ways to enhance student life and foster a thriving university community.
We also had the opportunity to participate in "Lead and Change," organized by the NUS at the University of Birmingham. This program is designed for both new and second-year sabbatical officers to learn essential skills for success. It brought together officers from across the UK to share experiences and visions for the upcoming year.
As we look ahead, there is much more to be done, and we are committed to keeping you informed of our progress.
Until next time.
