What is Movember about?

Movember is an annual movement held every November, encouraging men to grow moustaches to raise awareness for men's health issues, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. The term "Movember" combines "MO" a short abbreviation term for moustache, and "November." Founded in Australia in 2003, the Movember Foundation has since expanded globally, funding over 1,200 projects and raising significant funds to improve men's health outcomes.

Who is Movember aimed for?

Movember primarily targets men of all ages, from teenagers to seniors, encouraging them to take part in raising awareness for men's health issues. This includes prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. Additionally, Movember aims to involve everyone, as everybody in some way shape or form has a man in their life that the care about. We want to create a community-driven approach to health awareness and encouraging discussions about these critical issues.

Why is Movember Important?

Movember is fundamental for raising awareness about men's health issues, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. The campaign aims to reduce the stigma surrounding these topics, encouraging men to discuss their health openly and seek help when needed. Statistics show that men are disproportionately affected by these conditions. Movember promotes early detection and treatment while engaging a community support among participants, ultimately aiming to improve men's health outcomes and save lives.

In addition to this, our Vice Chancellor said to us that, if we raise £2500 he will shave off his beard! So get spreading the word and lets achieve this goal!

Where and when is Movember taking place at Roehampton?

It is through out the whole month of November and we have a wide range of events planned with multiple departments across the University. Below is our event list:

Opening Night (1st): Men will shave their beards on stage, sharing personal reasons for participating in Movember. The event will be live-streamed, and participants will receive razors to encourage engagement. Donations will support the initiative.

Waxing Event (7th): Participants will consent to waxing in a competitive bidding atmosphere, raising funds for Movember. A cleaning station will ensure comfort post-event.

Mental Health Talk + Cupcake Sale (13th): An informative session on mental health resources, paired with a cupcake sale, aims to promote awareness and community engagement.47 Acts of Connection (15th): Handouts with QR codes for donations will be distributed to raise awareness about men's health.12-Hour Walkathon (20th): Teams will walk a mile loop around campus to fundraise, with online sign-ups and directional signs along the route.

Football Match (25th): A match between Digby and Roehampton 1st, organized by sport presidents, will charge entry fees for fundraising.

Netball Event (28th): A mixed-team tournament will allow participants to compete for a £5 fee, contributing to fundraising efforts.

Awards Night (30th): An awards ceremony will celebrate achievements, recognizing top fundraisers and best moustaches, fostering community spirit and highlighting Movember's impact on men's health.
