Statement of support

Following the attack in Southport on Monday 29 July, we want to address the far-right violence that has taken place across the UK and highlight support available to Roehampton student.

Following the attack in Southport on Monday 29 July, we want to address the far-right violence that has taken place across the UK in the past week which has resulted in the outbreak of violence and riots. These events have not only caused physical damage but have instilled fear, insecurity, and anxiety among our diverse communities, particularly ethnic minorities and asylum seekers.

We condemn the acts of Islamophobic and xenophobic violence, racism, and hate that have been perpetrated in this past week. Racist graffiti, attacks on homes and businesses, and threats against individuals based on their ethnicity or immigration status are abhorrent and have no place in our society.

Further, we understand that these events may be particularly distressing for our students, staff, and the wider community. If you, or someone you know, needs support we encourage you to reach out during this challenging time. Below, we have listed the different services offered by the University and Students’ Union:

  1. Wellbeing Support: Our university's Wellbeing Service is here to assist you. They can be contacted at wellbeing@roehampton.ac.uk  If you're experiencing stress, anxiety, or need someone to talk to, please don't hesitate to reach out.
  2. Academic Support: If the current situation is affecting your studies, our Students' Union Advice Service can help you navigate academic processes, including applying for mitigating circumstances. Please contact su.advice@roehampton.ac.uk for support.
  3. Chaplaincy Services: Our university's Chaplaincy team is available for spiritual support and counsel, regardless of your faith or belief, you can get in touch with them at: chaplaincy@roehampton.ac.uk
  4. Reporting Incidents: If you experience or witness any hate crimes, you can report it to Stop Hate UK or the Police on 999 or 101 for non-emergencies, who will support you with this process. If you or someone you know is a student, colleague or visitor of our university, and has experienced any of these forms of unacceptable behaviour, you can let us know anonymously or you can provide your details and receive advice through Report + Support. Alternatively, please report issues to security at: (+44) 020 8392 3333. You can also specifically request a college warden who can support you after working hours (17:00 – 08:00).

Moreover, as a university with a significant international population, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the various global injustices that may be impacting you and your loved ones including issues that have been witnessed in Bangladesh during recent student-led protests.

Remember, you are not alone, and we are here to support you through this difficult period. If there are additional ways that we can support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us and we’ll continue to do all we can to support our community here at Roehampton.
